NEET-UG 2026 Cancelled Amid Massive Paper Leak Scandal: 22.79 Lakh Students Affected

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination after serious allegations of a nationwide question paper leak surfaced. The decision, approved by the Government of India, has created uncertainty for nearly 22.79 lakh medical aspirants across the country.

NEET-UG 2026 was conducted on May 3, 2026, at 5,432 centres in India and 14 centres abroad. However, soon after the exam, investigators uncovered evidence suggesting that portions of the paper had been leaked before the test.

How the Leak Was Exposed

According to the Rajasthan Police Special Operations Group (SOG), a handwritten “guess paper” had been circulating through WhatsApp groups nearly 42 hours before the examination.

Investigators revealed that around 140 questions from the Biology and Chemistry sections reportedly matched the leaked material almost exactly. Authorities also found that these documents were being sold illegally for amounts ranging from ₹20,000 to ₹2 lakh.

Officials suspect that organized “paper mafia” networks managed to gain access to parts of the NTA’s question bank before the final paper codes were locked. The leaked content was then compiled and distributed among students who paid for access.

Government Orders CBI Investigation

In its official statement, the NTA admitted that the integrity and fairness of the examination process had been compromised. The agency stated that continuing with the current results could permanently damage public trust in the medical entrance system.

To ensure transparency, the Government of India has transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Several suspects detained by local police have already been handed over to the agency for further questioning.

Re-NEET 2026: What Students Need to Know

The cancellation has triggered frustration and emotional stress among students, especially in coaching hubs like Kota. Many aspirants expressed anger on social media, saying that honest students are once again suffering because of organized cheating networks.

Political Reactions Intensify

The controversy has also sparked strong political reactions across the country.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi criticized the government for failing to stop repeated examination leaks, saying that the dreams and hard work of millions of middle-class students are being destroyed.

Meanwhile, Arvind Kejriwal demanded strict action against those involved and called for nationwide protests against examination corruption.

Major Changes May Come to India’s Exam System

Following the controversy, education experts and student organizations are demanding major reforms in India’s examination system.

The NTA is reportedly considering shifting large-scale entrance exams from traditional pen-and-paper mode to safer hybrid Computer-Based Testing (CBT) systems. Officials believe this could reduce the risk of physical paper leaks and improve security monitoring.

Conclusion

The cancellation of NEET-UG 2026 has become one of the biggest education controversies in recent years. While the government promises a transparent re-exam process, millions of students now face renewed pressure, uncertainty, and emotional exhaustion.

As the CBI investigation continues, students across India are waiting for answers, accountability, and a fair opportunity to compete for their medical careers.
